morocco Itinerary : 4 Days from Casablanca to Rabat
Welcome to the modern coastal city of Casablanca. Casablanca’s main attraction is the relatively modern and monumental Hassan II Mosque. Inaugurated in 1993, it sits on an outcrop jutting into the Atlantic and offers breathtaking views. It has a 690 feet (210 m) minaret—the tallest structure in Morocco and the tallest minaret in the world. What makes this mosque additionally unique is that it is one of the few mosques in the country non-Muslims are permitted to enter. Join a guided tour and appreciate the fine examples of Moroccan and Islamic artisanship.
From there, carry on eastward to the sprawling imperial city of Fes (Meknes, Rabat, and Marrakech are the others). Before venturing into its UNESCO protected medina (old quarter), climb the small hill to the Merenid Tombs to enjoy an encompassing view of the city as well as to orient yourself. It’s best to visit the tombs during dusk as the city lights start to come on and the muezzin’s calls to worship sound through the valley. Return to the medina and to your accommodation, a traditional riad.
Fes holds the distinction of being the oldest among the four imperial cities of Morocco and boasts the most complete medina in the Arab world. Virtually untouched since its foundation over a millennium ago, the labyrinthine streets of Fes offer a unique glimpse into medieval Moroccan life. Widely regarded as the country’s cultural hub, Fes is divided into three distinct parts: two medina quarters, Fes el Bali and Fes el Jdid, and the more contemporary, French colonial-influenced Ville Nouvelle. Embark on a half-day tour with your guide and delve into the city’s rich history and vibrant culture as you navigate the meandering alleys of these ancient medinas.
Your journey begins in Fes el Bali at the iconic Bab Boujeloud gate, where you’ll step into the bustling thoroughfare of Talâa Kebira. As you meander through this historic district, take note of the architectural influences from Spain and Tunisia that adorn the buildings lining the streets. Explore the lively markets and vibrant souks, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Your next stop is the Chouara Tannery, where you’ll be captivated by the sight of dye-filled stone pots and skilled craftsmen employing age-old techniques.
Continuing your exploration, marvel at the exquisite zellij tilework adorning the 14th-century Al Attarine Madrasa, a testament to Morocco’s rich artistic heritage. Then, venture to the Mellah, the ancient Jewish quarter and its associated cemetery, nestled within the confines of Fes el Jdid. If time allows, conclude your tour with a visit to Ville Nouvelle, where you’ll witness a striking juxtaposition of architectural styles, reflecting the city’s evolving identity.
Leaving Fes behind, your next destination is Meknes, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Ville Impériale, or Imperial City. Here, you can wander through lush gardens and opulent palaces, marvel at the grandeur of the Bab al-Mansour gate, and pay your respects at the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a testament to Morocco’s rich history. Don’t miss the chance to visit the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This sprawling archaeological complex is a treasure trove of well-preserved merchant homes, ancient temples, and vibrant mosaics, including the captivating Labors of Hercules.
Upon reaching Chefchaouen in the picturesque Rif Mountains, you’ll be greeted by the town’s signature feature: its blue-washed buildings that adorn the historic medina. Explore the maze-like narrow streets and alleyways that cling to the northern hillside, offering a glimpse into a town that has remained largely unchanged since the 15th century. Chefchaouen is known for its relaxed atmosphere and some of the friendliest people in the country.
Begin your exploration at Plaza Outa el-Hammam, the bustling main square, and consider savoring a delicious meal at one of the charming nearby restaurants or cafés. If you’re feeling adventurous, embark on a trek up the hillside to reach the city walls, and follow the path to Hotel Atlas. From the rooftop, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Blue City. As the day winds down, take a leisurely stroll east of the city to find a path leading to the white Spanish Mosque. Its elevated location provides the perfect vantage point to witness the sun setting behind the majestic mountains, casting Chefchaouen in a warm, enchanting glow.
Begin your day early, taking advantage of the quiet morning to capture captivating photos of the tranquil, people-less streets in Chefchaouen. Afterward, start your journey southward back to Casablanca, making a stop in the imperial city and the present-day capital of Morocco, Rabat.
In Rabat, immerse yourself in history by exploring the Chellah Necropolis fortification, located in the heart of the city. Stroll through the fascinating ruins and imagine the stories they hold. Next, venture into the enchanting Kasbah des Oudaias through its grand entrance. This old city center offers a glimpse into Rabat’s rich heritage.
Take a moment to unwind and find serenity at the 20th-century Andalusian Gardens, a peaceful oasis away from the crowds. As you continue your exploration, discover the impressive Hassan Tower, a minaret that remains from the incomplete mosque and Mausoleum of Mohamed V. The architectural grandeur of this site is sure to leave a lasting impression.
After your time in Rabat, make your way back to Casablanca. Depending on your departure schedule, consider a leisurely stroll along the Boulevard de la Corniche. To cap off your journey, indulge in a meal or refreshments at Rick’s Café, a renowned establishment that recreates the atmosphere of the iconic bar from the classic movie “Casablanca.” It’s a fitting way to wrap up your Moroccan adventure with a touch of cinematic nostalgia.
